An exacting artist who values fidelity to the composer’s intentions, American pianist Daniel Colalillo has cultivated a strong following among music lovers. Praised for his musical integrity, he has given commanding solo performances in important venues throughout the country, including at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Symphony Space, Steinway Hall, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, and Columbia University. As Artistic Director of Classical Keys, a chamber music series now in its fifth season, Mr. Colalillo organizes concerts at various New Jersey venues and at Klavierhaus in New York City. He has collaborated as a chamber musician with top soloists including doctoral artists from Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, and Indiana University; Avery Fisher Career Grant recipients; as well as orchestra members of the New York Philharmonic and the Met Opera. He has also appeared in performance throughout North America, including in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Nashville, Toronto, and Montreal. A dedicated advocate for contemporary music, Mr. Colalillo has premiered numerous works for solo piano and chamber music. During the COVID lockdown in 2020 he commissioned five composers to be a part of “Pandemic Piano Preludes.” Born and raised in New Jersey, Daniel abandoned piano lessons at an early age and, at 11, took up drums to join a progressive rock band. For the next few years he performed with the band and played snare drum with the Morris Knolls High School marching band. Thanks to the strong influence of his musical brother, Daniel was increasingly drawn to the works of Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin. At 15 he took up classical piano lessons once more, studying with Gustav Ferri, and Yuka Yanagi and focused on amassing and memorizing as much repertoire as possible. From there he attended Purchase Conservatory, where he studied with Paul Ostrovsky. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Piano Performance at Mannes School of Music under the tutelage of Tom Sauer and Eteri Andjaparidze. In addition, he studied with the highly regarded pianist Jeremy Denk, a recipient of the MacArthur Prize, and with esteemed American composer Lowell Liebermann. Mr. Colalillo has taught masterclasses at Belmont University and New York University. He serves on the piano faculty at Concordia Conservatory in Bronxville, NY and operates a private studio in Manhattan. In 2008 Mr. Colalillo released a well-received debut album “Mostly Scriabin.” Most recently, in June 2025 he performed as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concert No. 3, Op 37, with the Palisades Sinfonietta at the Broadway Presbyterian Church. In November of last year, he appeared as soloist in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 58 in G Major with the Baroque Orchestra at the Morris Museum, New Jersey. He currently serves on the Council board of Groupmuse, an organization dedicated to promoting chamber music house concerts in the United States and abroad.
